ABOUT SHALOM AND RUSOORD

The National Institute for the Deaf (NID) is the only organization in South Africa which provides social and 24/7 support / health services to elderly Deaf people. The NID renders daily services to two old age homes for the Deaf.

Rusoord Old Age Home for the Deaf in Bellville was opened in 1995 and NID took up the reins during 2007.

Shalom Old Age Home for the Deaf was opened in 2009 and is situated on the NID campus in Worcester.

Both old age homes accommodate a diversity of elderly Deaf people (Cultured Deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, deafblind, physically disabled and multiply disabled Deaf). Dedicated staff render social and support services on a daily basis and NID strives to establish a homely atmosphere to the elderly Deaf residents. The NID provides various programs and activities (working in protected workshops, fitness and social activities / games and participation in regular excursions) that are welcomed and enjoyed by the residents. NID ensures that the elderly Deaf are able to live out their golden years in a secure, caring and Deaf-friendly environment.
