* Definitions

  • Multiple disabilities
    “Multiple disabilities” is the collective name for a combination of two or more disabilities. The disability requiring the most specialised or urgent treatment is usually seen as the primary disability. All forms of disability have different grades of severity with regard to cause or function. These grades are specified by the following terms: light, moderate, severe and profound.

    Classification is applied according to the following categories (some conditions may fit into more than one category, eg autism): physical, sensory, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, speech and language, emotional, cultural (milieu disadvantaged) spiritual and learning disabled.

  • Frailty
    This term describes a chronic condition of physical and / or psychological inability to carry out basic and simple selfcare tasks, to participate in a workshop and / or therapeutic activity and in need of 24 hour continuous individual care and supervision. Aforementioned may also include illnesses, disabilities and syndromes with a high health risk.

  • Disruptive behaviour
    This term describes actions and interactions with people and the environment which disturbs the peace in the therapeutic community and where no benefit is derived from the therapeutic treatment which forms part of the care and development programme of Lewensruimte for the Deaf. This includes actions which threaten or endanger the safety, health, human dignity and property of the residents or staff members of Lewensruimte for the Deaf.
