EDUCATION & TRAINING

Deaf people, because of the nature of their disability, need special education to unlock the full potential of each learner, and enable them to become self supporting citizens. Education of Deaf learners started in 1866 in South Africa when the first school for the Deaf was established in Cape Town.

The second school for the Deaf, the De la Bat School, was established in Worcester in 1881. The school caters for Deaf learners from the age of 3 years up to school leaving age, with curricula being the same as those used in schools for hearing learners. By way of South African Sign Language and speech reading, teaching of a high standard is given by dedicated and qualified staff. Click here for further information on the De la Bat School for the Deaf.

Further education and training is done by the NID College which offers occupational training for students to prepare them to be reliable, skilled and competent workers for the open labour market. This training lays the foundation for further development, training and specialization. Click here for further information on training programmes offered by the College.

Deaf Christian Ministry Africa (DCMA) provides training for adult Deaf persons to qualify for Deaf ministry. For further information on Deaf ministry training, click here.
