HOSPITALITY

KITCHEN CLEANER
COOK-CONVENIENCE FOOD PROGRAMME

This is a one year programme presented at NID College.

Students learn how to clean the kitchen correctly and effectively and also how to handle different equipment in the kitchen or at the workplace. They also learn basic cooking skills as well as the different cooking methods.

ASSISTANT CHEF

This is a one year programme during which students are trained to become a chef’s assistant. Students learn to read recipes and work independently.

Students are placed at workplaces as part of the programme in order to prepare them for working successfully with hearing people in the workplace.

PROFESSIONAL COOKERY LEVEL 4

The Learnership Programme in Professional Cookery Level 4 is a skills programme and the students receive a certificate from THETA on successful completion of the programme. It is a one year programme and it is advisable that students who wish to enrol in this programme have completed the Assistant Chef Programme or have passed Grade 12.

Unit standards worth 178 credits are covered in this course. Theoretical and part of the practical training take place at NID College. The students work 50% of their time in workplaces selected by the college in order to gain work experience.

Skills training in subjects such as numeracy, communication, and basic computer as well as life skills form part of their training and help to prepare them for the workplace.

On completion of their training programme, they are successfully placed in kitchens near their homes.

MARTHA’S TEA GARDEN

Martha’s Tea Garden is a Restaurant managed by the National Institute for the Deaf in Worcester. It is part of NID College and serves as a training restaurant, where the Professional Cookery Level 4 Learnership students receive their experiential training. They gain experience in the Restaurant industry. Martha’s Tea Garden is open to the public and has an a la carte menu.

Take-aways can be ordered as well as party platters. Freshly baked scones and muffins as well as assorted cakes are available daily.

They also cater for functions such as birthdays, weddings and conferences, for up to a 100 persons as well as year end functions.

Martha’s Tea Garden’s business hours are:
Monday – Friday: 08h30 – 17:00
Saturdays: 08h30 – 13h00

Open on certain public holidays and open for public functions on request.
